What's New
In the June 2013 issue of the Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, Murray Gray et al. report on investigations of different solvents for non-aqueous extraction of Alberta oil sands. Non-aqueous extraction of bitumen from oil sands is an attractive alternative for the exploration of this important Canadian resource because it can potentially reduce fresh water demands of the extraction process and eventually eliminate the need for tailings ponds.
In anticipation of the 69th Annual General Meeting of the Chemical Institute of Canada - to take place May 28 in Québec City - CIC chair Russell Boyd has prepared a report that highlights the programs and activities undertaken by the CIC and Constituent Societies over the past year. On May 7, the National Research Council announced it was "open for business" and would focus on providing research and development capacity for Canadian companies, as opposed to fundamental, curiosity-driven research. We invited members of Canada's chemical community to respond to these changes in a blog post. On May 14, CSC president Cathleen Crudden was quoted in an article on the subject in Chemistry World. You can read her comments here, and you can add your own here.
The CIC successfully hosted its first interactive, career-based webinar titled “CareerClass 101 | Social Media & Your 3D Personal Brand” on April 2nd, 2013. If you're looking for the next step in your career and wondering how the world of social media fits in, view the webinar with Alan Kearns, Canada's Career Coach and founder of CareerJoy as he shares insight on managing your personal online brand.
